KIERA

Kiera’s alarm woke her.

She’d been dreaming of running through the night in her wolf skin alongside Elijah. It’d been a recurring dream since the night they had introduced each other to their wolves.

She groaned. Kiera loved having that dream. It was so real. She could still smell the fresh air and distinct scents wafting around her racing body. Looking over her shoulder and seeing Elijah’s majestic wolf matching her pace …

Her gut clenched suddenly at the realization of what was bringing her so much joy. She shook her head in agitation. No. It’s not Elijah.

She glared at herself in the mirror of her bathroom, annoyed that she couldn’t even lie to herself. It had already been three nights ago, and she was still all hot and bothered by it.

As she brushed her teeth, Kiera looked around the bathroom. It dawned on her just how at home she’d made herself here. Fear flickered in her mind, thinking she wouldn’t be able to control her natural and divinely-made urges. Not being in control scared her far more than anything else.

In the shower, she came up with a good and honest reason as to why she found herself still at Elijah’s house after healing. For the convenience of the case, she told herself. That was why she stayed.

Yes, maybe being fated mates played a role, but the main point was that she had promised to help him and vice versa on the rogue case. They needed each other and would hopefully solve this issue sooner, working together rather than later working separately.

Especially since Kiera seemed to be the only possible culprit in most of his pack’s mind. She knew how it looked, and it was starting to get to her. This case needed to be closed and fast.

Kiera made her way through the town to talk to some of the pack.

Elijah had insisted he go with her, but she had won by pointing out that some may see his presence as too intimidating and “forget” certain things, but they wouldn’t if they just thought of it as a casual conversation.

As she mulled over what she already knew versus what the public knew, her thoughts were broken by an outburst of laughter.

Kiera’s eyes shot toward the noise, finding a gleeful little girl seeing one of her friends on the sidewalk. As the two pups ran toward each other with open arms, the moms shared a smile before getting closer for conversation.

It was nice to see such a close shifter community act like a pack should. Friendly, trusting, and most of all, like a family. The way a pack was supposed to be run.

Kiera smiled as she continued her walk toward the pack’s daycare. She knew a lot of the women would be there around this time for pick-up. For investigative purposes, it would be better than sitting at a salon.

She found herself looking forward to talking to them, investigation aside. The kindness she’d been shown while healing was overwhelming. It reminded her of what packs were supposed to be.
